Philippe Valy

Art Collect - Philippe Valy

Philippe Valy was born in Sanary-sur-Mer, in the south of France, but it is across the world that he shaped the contours of an exceptional artistic career. In the late 1980s, he settled on the island of Saint Martin, where his paintings met with immediate success — “They sold like hot cakes,” he recalls. In 1993, Valy crossed the Atlantic and moved to the United States. There, he exhibited in prestigious galleries and built an international reputation. Painter, designer, sculptor, jewellery and fashion creator, he developed a singular universe at the crossroads of avant-garde, surrealism and symbolism.

His style is unmistakable: bold colours, geometric forms, dreamlike details and a liberated expressiveness. He masters the gesture, plays with material and meaning. Mixed media, large-format canvases, transformed objects… Valy forbids himself nothing. Through each work, he delivers a vision, an emotion, sometimes a provocation — always driven by an unapologetic artistic sincerity.

In parallel with his artistic career, Philippe Valy explored the world of fashion. In 2017, he launched his brand: Philippe Valy Brand. Leggings, dresses, accessories — each piece becomes a wearable canvas. The garments are hand-painted, produced in limited editions, and sold as artworks in their own right. The body becomes a support, the street a gallery. At the Drama Desk Awards in New York, he created a hand-painted tuxedo and evening gown, which the nominated artists later signed. The pieces were then auctioned for a charitable cause.

Among his collectors are celebrities such as Anita Ekberg, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Bill Clinton and Jane Fonda. A well-known anecdote: he created a painting of the Statue of Liberty for Clinton a year before his inauguration. Equally at ease in glamorous soirées as in New York cafés, Valy cultivates the art of connection, generosity and sharing.

His iconic jewel, My Last Butt, is a pendant in gold or silver shaped like a crushed cigarette butt. A meaningful artwork, conceived as a symbolic reward for those who decide to quit smoking. An artistic gesture, a strong idea, a message of freedom.

Now back in France, in his native South, Philippe Valy continues his work. Between painting, design, fashion creation and artistic projects, he remains faithful to his pioneering energy. His artworks are exhibited around the world — in the United States, Hong Kong, Monaco… A multifaceted artist, he turns every medium into a field of expression, every creation into an invitation to see differently.
