Nicole Lavigne

Born in Manchester, England, Nicole Lavigne grew up between two worlds: Europe and Africa. Childhood in the Central African Republic, fascination for equatorial flora, luminous faces and wild fauna… this early immersion shaped a gaze that is sensitive, curious, and deeply committed. Now living in Saint-Bardoux in the Drôme, after many years in the Paris region, the painter continues to create in close harmony with nature, surrounded by her animals, and inspired by long horseback rides with Ti-Punch and her loyal dog Radjah.

Nicole Lavigne transcribes this intimate bond with the living world onto her canvases. She stands within the lineage of contemporary wildlife art — and elevates it to a form of militant expression. Portraits of wild animals, human-like gazes, vegetal or natural scenes: each work carries a strong message, a silent cry for endangered species, a chromatic alert about the threats to our planet. “Contemplate, understand, protect”: such is her credo — an art of respect and awakening.

Her painting — which she describes as organic figurative work — is marked by rich textures, instinctive gestures, and bold, unapologetic colors. Large-scale oil paintings have become her ideal terrain of expression, both free and immersive. Through them, she gives shape to her emotions and convictions, painting with fervor and spontaneity. Her aim is not simply to depict an animal or a landscape, but to convey its soul, its vital impulse, and sometimes its silent suffering. Each canvas becomes a vibrant manifesto, a profound dialogue between the viewer’s gaze and that of the animal. The expressive intensity that emanates from her work never leaves one indifferent: it questions, moves, and often deeply stirs.

Through her brushes, Nicole Lavigne chooses to take a stand. She does not hold signs, she does not chant slogans in the streets — but her artworks speak loudly. They express the intimate bond that unites humankind with all living beings; they denounce the assaults on biodiversity; they call for an urgent reconciliation between our species and the others. The artist paints to awaken awareness, to share her love of nature, and to warn of its fragility. Her art becomes a universal language, an act of poetic and pictorial resistance. At a time when ecology has become a global concern, Nicole Lavigne’s painting resonates as a contemporary, sensitive, and deeply committed artistic approach.

This powerful vision, carried with consistency and sincerity, has been recognized through several distinctions. She has received the ANAC Academician Certificate (National Academy of Contemporary Art), a 2022 Art Valuation Certificate validating the professional recognition of her work, as well as a Certificate of Artistic Merit from the Luxembourg Art Prize in 2021 — a prestigious international distinction. These awards are not mere accolades: they testify to the growing influence of her work and to the connection it creates with an audience moved by her authenticity. Today, Nicole Lavigne continues her path with humility and determination, painting as one breathes — with the quiet conviction that art can, too, help preserve what remains of the living world.
