Laëtitia Vernieux

Born in 1976, Laëtitia Vernieux is a visual artist and steel sculptor — but above all, a self-taught creator whose talent asserts itself with strength and precision in each of her works. For thirteen years, she taught Applied Arts in a vocational high school, guiding many students along the path of graphic expression while pursuing her own creative journey. Her artistic adventure truly began in 2006 with Mémoire enracinée, a monumental fresco composed of twenty independent pieces. Created with charcoal, sanguine, bistre and paper, this work — now installed in London — immediately revealed her artistic rigor and her commitment to material.

One of Laëtitia Vernieux’s signature mediums goes against traditional artistic practices: the ballpoint pen. Where others sign contracts or jot down notes, she draws bodies, gazes, fragments of humanity. With almost surgical precision, she sculpts the white of the paper, in a meticulous process that impresses as much as it questions. The rigor of the line becomes an act of resistance — a freehand operation, without a safety net.

In her early works, she also used charcoal, sanguine and bistre to create a series of insects that gradually transformed into metallic creatures. With Le Carcan, her first oil painting, she crossed a symbolic boundary and freed herself from her own chains. This was followed by Les Animaux, then Société et décadence, a finely executed watercolor series. Although its title suggests rupture or denunciation, the series was born from a moment of inner calm. It gently reflects the tensions of the world.

With Pop Hard, the artist explored new textures and chromatic intensities. But it is above all Les Mains et les Pieds — her ballpoint pen series — that commands admiration. Each drawing appears almost photographed, the realism so striking that one imagines seeing veins pulse, tension ripple, a memory of human gesture inscribed in the line. For Laëtitia Vernieux, the extremities of the body are more than anatomical forms: they tell a life story.

Among her influences, Laëtitia cites Dalí, Schiele and Warhol. Three worlds, three languages, which she absorbs without ever imitating them. She has exhibited at numerous contemporary art fairs and salons, including the Art3f shows in Paris and the SIAC in Marseille, as well as at the Espace 22 gallery in Monaco. Features in magazines such as Côte Basque Madame, Maison et Jardin and Sud-Ouest have further increased her visibility, confirming her unique place on the contemporary art scene.

In 2018 and 2019, she also took part in philanthropic initiatives in England and Japan, demonstrating that art can be both an act of giving and a gesture of shared humanity. Elusive and multifaceted, Laëtitia Vernieux continues to build an unclassifiable body of work — at the crossroads of techniques, eras and human resonances. A free, intense, uncompromising oeuvre.
