Kloo

“Painting comes from the place where words can no longer express themselves.” — Gao Xingjian

Born in 1951, Pascale Rey—known by her artist name Kloo (pronounced “Calou”)—grew up in a large family far removed from the world of art. From an early age, she showed a creative sensitivity that led her to pursue formal training at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. Yet at the time, her vocation was thwarted: her family refused to let her pursue an artistic career. Only in 2012, after a long hiatus, did she return to creation. A new life opened before her, with painting becoming a space of freedom, joy, and renewal.

In 2017, two exhibitions in Vendée and Brittany marked her first public steps. The response was enthusiastic. She later settled in the Landes region, where she became a professional artist starting in 2019.

“Painting joy, pleasure, and personal fulfillment through daily artistic practice is a jubilant discipline,” she says. This credo radiates through each of her works. Far from dark or conceptual concerns, Kloo embraces an art of light, softness, and inner balance. Her universe, shaped by natural elements—water, vegetation, musical vibrations—invites serenity while remaining profoundly alive. She conceives painting as a bridge between herself and the viewer, a silent language where every canvas becomes a space for emotional exchange.

Material work is essential to her process: sand, pure pigments, papers, and collages enrich the pictorial surface, structuring and nurturing it. Texture converses with color to create a sense of depth and quiet energy. This formal exploration opens the doors of the imagination, suggesting abstract or dreamlike landscapes where the visitor’s gaze is free to wander. For Kloo, to paint is to build—stone by stone, canvas by canvas—a generous inner world, connected to reality yet always transfigured by emotion.

Kloo also places great importance on the experience of exhibiting. As a member of the Art Progress 2000 association and the ART-KaMaHé collective (with sculptor Hélène Lusignan and photographer Manorack), she approaches each artistic event as a genuine human encounter. Scenography, the atmosphere, and the exchanges with visitors are all integral to her practice. Meeting people, discussing her work, observing their gaze and reactions—these interactions nourish her artistic process. For her, art is not lived in solitude, but in the circulation of shared emotions.

Her work has been exhibited in numerous cities: Dax, Ozourt, Mont-de-Marsan, Bayonne, Biarritz, Hendaye, as well as Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Nice, and even internationally (United States, England, the Netherlands, Germany…). Her paintings travel, just as she does, carrying with them the light and the positive vibration of their creator. For Kloo, painting is a way to release gentle energy, to reconcile the visible and the invisible, and to offer—through color and material—a form of essential joy: simple, profound, and shared.

TESTIMONIALS

I have two paintings by Kloo. The first is entirely filled with a restless sea, where the foam of the waves blends into the deep, dark blue of the sky. In the second, the white background brings lightness to the flowing curves of a dancing nature-painting. Both works draw me into their swirling motions — with pure delight!

“I’m incredibly lucky to have several of Kloo’s artworks displayed in my home, arranged like a nurturing cocoon. From room to room, each painting feels like a personal invitation — to pause, to ground oneself, or to dream. It’s a true luxury and an incredible feeling I wish upon everyone! You dive with delight into every detail, then step back to take in the whole piece. No visitor remains indifferent — everyone is struck by the richness of the palette and the variety of styles, each resonating with the mood of the moment. Everyone has a favorite — and it’s perfectly fine to change your mind. As for me, I love them all!”

Our successive encounters with Kloo allowed us to discover her painting, her work, her explorations. We were quickly captivated by her abstract reasoning — built on forms, movement, swirling colors, and textures either suggested or layered. Each viewer, when standing before one of her canvases, is invited to live their own sensory experience. It’s this unique connection between the observer and the artwork that truly brings the piece to life. In such a relationship, a painting can carry as many names as it has viewers… In that sense, the creator — Kloo — is, in a way, momentarily dispossessed of her work every time someone engages in this personal journey. By hanging Kloo’s paintings in our home, we were certainly looking to create harmony within our space — but we also made available, for ourselves and for all who visit, tickets to a mental voyage. Thank you again, Kloo, from the bottom of our hearts.
